Two big meets to start New Year

MARQUETTE – Back in the pool after the holiday break, with a full slate of swimmers at the Houghton Splash and Dash on Jan. 7 and Marquette Splash and Dash on Jan. 14, the Emeralds may not have placed high in the rankings, but they still improved on some of their personal times.

At the Gremlin meet in Houghton, three Emeralds placed first in their respective events. Grant Mason took first in the 50 backstroke with at time of 30.27; Nathan Schoenow placed first in the 100 IM with a time of 1:03.06; and Dustin Brewster placed first in the 50 butterfly with a time of 26.25.

Commenting on the threesome, Coach Parker Birr said, “Dustin Grant and Nate all placed well these past couple of weekends and I’m happy with all of the times coming into the new year.”

Second place boys: Schoenow, 50 breastroke, 32.60; 200 freestyle relay, Mason, Spencer Miotke, Schoenow, Brewster, 1:47.64; Kody Brudvik, diving, 33.35

Third place boys: 200 medly relay, Mason, Schoenow, Brewster and Miotke, 1:59.85

Girls second place: Tamara Nadeau, 50 backstroke, 38.99

Girls fourth place: 200 freestyle relay, Clara Gilroy, Maddy Maline, Nadeau, Carley Schoenow, 2:09.68

At the Marquette meet, the team experienced the same thing, multiple heats and full lanes.

Schoenow was the lone Emerald to a first place at the event swimming a 31.83 in the 50 breaststroke.

Second place boys: Schoenow, 50 freestyle, 23.80; Brewster, 50 butterfly, 25.75.

Third place boys: Brewster, 50 freestyle, 24.10; Mason, 50 backstroke, 30.37

Fourth place boys: 200 freestyle relay, Mason, Miotke, Brewster, Schoenow, 1:45.93

The Emeralds swam in Kingsford after press time of Tuesday.

They will travel to Rudyard today (Thrusday) and Westwood on Jan. 26.
