Senior Center

Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart for the wonderful support that we received on passing the Senior Center millage. A whopping 973 “yes” votes taking the lead of 283 “no” votes. A great big thank you goes out to all those “yes” voters for taking the time to get out and show your support!

Get your dancing shoes on, as we have the Front Yard Gang as entertainment for our potluck scheduled for today Thursday, Aug. 16. Entertainment will be at 4 p.m. with dinner following at 5 p.m. Bring a dish to pass and invite a few friends!

If you are looking to get help clipping your toe nails, you might want to make an appointment for the Foot Care Clinic at the Center, which is provided by North Woods Home Nursing. To do so, call the Center at 341-5923. You are asked to bring your own towel. The cost is $12.50.

Wow, where is the summer going? The Sept. 12 and 13 overnight Kewadin bus trip will be here before you know it. The bus will depart from the Senior Center parking lot at 9 a.m. sharp. We ask those going on the trip to please park cars over to the left of the front of the building, allowing space for our daily activity participants.

Are you at the age, like myself, where you start worrying, or actually wondering why you didn’t take better care of yourself? Well, you might want to consider signing up for the Life Line Screening which will be held at the Center on Saturday, Sept. 15. They will be offering several screenings, which include:

• Stroke/Carotid Artery Screening – $60. This is a screening that looks for buildup of fatty plaque, a leading cause of strokes.

• Heart Rhythm Screening (Atrial Fibrillation) – $60. This is a quick and easy test using EKG electrodes placed on the arms and legs to identify the presence or absence of an irregular heartbeat.

• Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening – $60. An Ultrasound screening for an abdominal aneurysm (enlargement) that could lead to a ruptured aorta.

• Peripheral Arterial Disease Screening – $60. Evaluates for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in the lower extremities, which increases the risk of heart disease.

• Osteoporosis Risk Assessment – $35. Ultrasound screens the heal for bone mass density. Osteoporosis is painless and silent in its early stages.

They are offering all four tests for only $139. You can add an osteoporosis screening for $10 more or have all five tests for $149, which is quite a savings.

If you schedule an appointment by calling (800) 324-9458, please mention you are calling for the Manistique Senior Center “Helping

Hands” program. By doing so the Center receives $10 for every person that calls requesting this. The best part is the person calling also receives $10 off the screenings.

I was just contacted by Tonya LaFave, who has been involved in the Matter of Balance programs from UPCAP and she had some exciting news to share.

Dan Jones, from Lansing, Mich., a Master Trainer for Tai Chi for Health Institute, will be offering a Tai Chi for Arthritis Instructors Certification Workshop in Escanaba Oct. 13 and 14. This is the first time the workshop has been offered locally so participants do not need to travel downstate. They can either learn the form in a weekend for their personal use or become teachers. It is easy to learn, effective and safe.

Tai Chi for Arthritis is specially designed by Dr. Paul Lam with Tai Chi and medical experts using sun style Tai Chi for participants with all levels of health needs as well as those who are in good health. It is safe and effective for people who have arthritis, chronic pain, Diabetes, MS, Parkinson’s, people who have not exercised, people using canes and walkers, etc. It can be done standing or seated. In fact the Arthritis Foundation’s use Tai Chi for Arthritis as their program. Many MS groups do too!

It improves balance, flexibility, muscle strength, mobility, heart/ lung activity, and alignment. It helps to reduce falls and fear of falling, pain, blood pressure and stress. Tai Chi consists of slow, fluid movements with deep breathing. Many participants, who do not have arthritis, practice this form of Tai Chi because it is short, easy on the joints and fun!

Cathi Knauf, BSN has been the sole teacher of Tai Chi for Arthritis in the UP for many years and would like to spread this wonderful program to all corners of the UP. If you choose to attend and become a certified instructor you will not only have her personal support as a Senior Trainer, but also an international community to belong to. If you have friends or family members who may be physical/occupational therapists or assistants, nurses, doctors, community activity directors, certified trainers and exercise instructors, this program would be great for them too.

The workshop fee is $225. There is a cancellation fee of $25, with no refund after Sept. 28. Classes will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (13 ACSM CE hours available.) The workshop will be held at Community Tai Chi, 1401 N. 26th Suite 219, Escanaba, MI 49829

During this two day workshop you will:

• Learn and demonstrate the 21 movement set of Tai Chi plus the warm ups/cool down sets.

• Learn and demonstrate how to teach using the Step Wise Teaching Method and set up classes.

• Learn and describe how to integrate Tai Chi principles into existing exercises and activities of daily living.

• Learn and identify how to modify the movements to class participants’ capabilities.

The workshop includes a manual, a two year certificate from Tai Chi for Health Institute and refreshments. For further information, or to register, call Cathi Knauf, Senior Trainer, at (906) 280-1083. Her website is www.communitytaichi.com.
