Zion Luthern to host Santa Lucia Festival

MANISTIQUE – Community members are invited to attend the Santa Lucia Festival at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manistique. The event takes place Dec. 12 at 7 pm.

The Santa Lucia Festival is a tradition at the Zion Lutheran Church dating back to 1953 with Myrtle Estern as the very first Lucia. There have been many ‘Lucias’ from the community over the years.

As always, the girl chosen to represent St. Lucia is kept a secret until the night of the festival where she makes her debut wearing a white dress with a red sash and a crown of lighted candles.

The history of Santa Lucia starts early in Italy and moves to Scandinavia when famine and darkness prevail. Santa Lucia arrives bringing light and food and hope to those who most need it in the dead of winter.

As is tradition, Zion women will present a full program leading into the Advent Season, ending the evening with refreshments in Augustana Hall.
