Dan Beaton, his 11-year-old son Dillon and 12-year-old son Declan, took off on a trip downstate last Monday that they hoped would go off without a hitch — or in this case a wrecker ride. When he was only 10 himself, Dan and his father jumped in their 1964 Oldsmobile 98 and headed north, in what Dan recalls as “a carnival ride,” battling high winds as they crossed the Mackinac Bridge with the top down. Since that trip, the classic 98 has been in storage here in the U.P., only taken out on an occasional short trip and for an annual appearance at the Manistique Merchants Association Antique Car Show each Labor Day weekend. After a tune-up from Curran Chevrolet, the Beatons headed south, with plans of taking the car back to its birthplace in Lansing for an antique Oldsmobile show there this August. 33p1_0.jpg
