Graffiti is shown painted on the front of the East Breakwater Lighthouse Sunday morning. The Manistique Public Safety Department is currently investigating the incident, along with another incident which occurred at the Lighthouse Clubhouse playground. According to City Manger Sheila Aldrich, the acts were “senseless” and crews have worked to successfully rid the landmark and playground of the graffiti. Aldrich also noted that the city is currently awaiting a letter from the Coast Guard which will offer the city ownership of the lighthouse. If the city decides to accept ownership of the light, they will have to commit to restoring and repairing it, added Aldrich. Since the Coast Guard will retain easement on the lighthouse, she noted that even if the lighthouse is not taken over by the city, and possibly put up for sale, it will have to remain intact and the light operational.
