Equipment is coming in and crews from Hebert Construction of Iron River, Mich. and Elmer’s Crane and Dozer of Traverse City, Mich., are expected to be here Monday to begin the infrastructure improvements on Manistique’s east and west sides. In January, the city approved a bid of $4,177,686.71 from Hebert Construction for work on the west side and a bid of $4,486,530.55 from Elmer’s for infrastructure work on the east side. The east side project will include Manistique, Michigan and Garden avenues from Range to Saginaw. On the west side, the project will include Second through Fourth streets, from West Elk to Caribou, First Street from Beaver to Caribou, and West Elk from Fifth Street to Schoolcraft Avenue. A separate project, to be done at the same time, includes improvements on Deer Street (M-94) from Fifth Street to Chippewa Avenue, including water, sanitary and storm sewer lines, street surface, sidewalk replacement and several pedestrian mini-parks or rest areas. According to City Manager Sheila Aldrich, construction is expected to be finished this year, with an estimated completion date of Nov. 14. Progress reports will air on Charter Cable TV channel 21 and will be posted in the Pioneer-Tribune. 4p1.jpg
