Emeralds top Escanaba in end-of-season rematch

ESCANABA – Continuing their winning streak, the Manistique Emeralds’ volleyball team defeated Escanaba on the road Oct. 4. The Emeralds swept the match 3-0, with set scores of 26-24, 26-24, and 27-25.

Composure and maintaining balance under pressure, the varsity squad was able to stay on top of three competitive sets.

“This match was a battle,” stated Head Coach Amy Nixon. “With very close scores for all three sets, I think the difference ... was that we stayed composed and did not error under the pressure.”

The Emeralds dropped their match against the Eskymos 2-3 earlier in the season when they narrowly lost the fifth set 12-15.

“The win felt good knowing that we had lost to Esky earlier in the season 3-2,” Nixon added. “This was a good test for us to see what level of volleyball we are capable of playing at and how much we have improved.”

For the Emeralds, Joslyn Muth recorded nine digs, 32 assists, two blocks, and a kill.

Senior Sydny Peterson had 20 serve receives and 18 digs.

Teammate Lenna Smith had eight kills, a block, 19 digs, and 21 serve receives.
