Fish Report

Ret. Sgt. John Walker

Well, here we are going into the fall season with bear season already open. It sure has been a nice week weather wise with the nice cool nights where it is perfect for sleeping and then warming up during the day to where it becomes T-shirt weather. I guess this is one of the main reasons I love being up here in the U.P.

If you have any doubt of the fall season being upon us all you have to do is take a ride by Linda’s in Cooks and see the big pile of sugar beets that are already there. One thing for sure with so few of these little corner stores left it is nice to have one between home and camp in case I forget something which I have been known to do. It seems that they carry a bigger assortment of outdoor items now so this makes it nice.

After much deep study I have come to the conclusion that there are a lot of politicians out there that are like a number of flocks of turkey I have seen in the last few days. This has happened two to three times in the last week but the other day when returning home from camp a big flock of turkey ran across the road right in front of the vehicle coming towards me near the Moose lodge. They stopped and I stopped while they all ran across, the other car took off but before I could do more than just start moving the flock of turkey that was now on my side of the road decided maybe they did not want to be on this side after all and made a move to return to the side of the road they were just on. It was a panic move some flew over my car some ran in front of it, while others half flew and half ran almost under the car.

I’ll let you guess why this reminds me of certain people who cannot decide which side of the road they really want to be on.

I am going to have to do some deep thinking about the use of a bird feeder to attract deer. I know of a number of cases where people had a bird feeder out and here comes a nice buck to eat lunch at their bird feeder. There were some people that had a regular bird feeder along with a hummingbird feeder only to have the three bears come in at night to have a midnight snack.

In talking to them I told them we could set up one of my game cameras to see if we could get a picture of the bear. We never got any pictures of the bear but two to three bucks came in to eat at the bird feeder. There is only one technical problem with hunting the bucks that were on the game camera and that is they usually made their move to the bird feeder right around 3 a.m. when it is still rather dark out to say the least. But at least one knows there are some nice bucks out there.

This falls under my opinion and that old saying. “It’s just a matter of time.” I know that there are a good number of ATV-4-wheelers that are now street legal so to speak. This means they have a legal right to operate on a road the same as cars and trucks. But I would recommend that when some people do they maybe should engage their brain before racing up a road flying and meeting vehicles going the other way.

There is no doubt in my mind that the time will come when driving like some of them do in a vehicle with no protection when there is an accident the ORV will lose big time. I know they are out there having a good time and fun but the consequences could be disastrous. Some of you out there may get upset when I say something about this but in my time working I have seen too many fatal accidents where people were just out having fun.

Fall is a busy time and a great time to go out and have some fun and there are so many things for a Yooper to do this time of year. But before you do, take the time to check out all the safety equipment you need for your adventures. Take time to read over the rules and treat the other people out there like you would like to be treated.

Even when I was working I tried to live with this in mind and for the most part it always seemed to work out. If you stop and think about it for a minute, this may be one of the things that has become a lost art in today’s world but it does still work.
