Elmer I. Mercier

GARDEN – Elmer I. Mercier, 87, of Garden, Mich., passed away on Sunday, June 3, 2018, at his home in Fairbanks Township surrounded by his loving family.

He was born May 25, 1931, in Garden, the son of Edmond and Mary (Rochefort) Mercier and attended the Puffy Creek School.

On Feb. 3, 1951, he married the former Rhea S. Leazier in Manistique, Mich. They made their home and raised their family in Garden. Rhea preceded him in death on March 2, 2010. Elmer worked as a dairy farmer for much of his life. He also worked for Mead Paper Company and was a bulldozer operator.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Garden. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Elmer is survived by children, Cheryl (Michael) Daoust of Battle Creek, Mich., Marsha (Richard) Bates of Battle Creek, Mary (Joe) Polmatier of Millington, Mich. and Lisa Cota (Chris Weber) of Garden; seven grandchildren; six greatgrandchildren; sisters, Geraldine Mullen of Battle Creek, Marlene (Raymond) DeRousha of Manistique, and Charlene Thormodsgard of Erskine, Minn.; and her sister-inlaws, Nancy Mercier and Cleo Mercier; along with many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Cary Mercier; and his siblings, Noreen Mercier, Emerald Mercier, Eileen Archey and Eldin Mercier.

A memorial gathering will be held from 2:30-4 p.m. on Monday, June 11, at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Garden. A memorial service will follow at 4 p.m., at the funeral home, with Father Mariusz Sierhart officiating. Burial will be in the New Garden Cemetery in Garden Township, Mich.

Memorial donations may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
