Swim hosts Polar Plunge

Finals left on their schedule, the Emerald swim team was making every stoke count Tuesday evening when they hosted the annual Polar Plunge.

Ishpeming/Negaunee took home the trophy for the boys with a team score of 110. Westwood took second with 49 and the Emeralds finished with 43.

For the girls, Ishpeming/ Negaunee took first with 100, Westwood second at 59, and the Emeralds had 49.

In events where every second counts, team members continued to improve their times from last week. Joe Bar placed first in the 50 butterfly with a time of 29.41, dropping a tenth of a second. Barr also placed first in his other event, the 50 backstroke, dropping two seconds for a time of 29:59.

Maddie Schwartz placed first in the 50 breaststroke, dropping 0.6 of a second for her best time, 43.38.

Competing in the 50 butterfly, Elle Pugh dropped five seconds from her time to achieve 44.93.

Megan Espinosa dropped one second in the 100 freestyle for a time of 1:22.89.

The biggest improvement this week was from Darren McCaffrey in the 100 freestyle. He dropped 11 seconds to finish with a time of 1:24.69.

According to the coaching staff, the squad also had an impressive night in the pool on the road in Westwood Feb. 1.

Darren Hicks qualified for finals in the 100 breaststroke, dropping four seconds. He dropped five seconds in his 200 IM event to take first.

Melanie Jones finished with her best time in the 100 butterfly.

Elle Pugh dropped four in the 100 butterfly and seven in her 500 freestyle events.

Swimming the 500 freestyle for the first time this season, Shelby Misniakiewicz dropped more than a minute from last year.

Barr placed first in both of his individual events. Anna VanDyck placed first in the 100 backstroke.

The 400 freestyle relay consisting of Abby Burnham, Espinoza, Misniakiewicz, and Erica LaBar placed first.

Abby Burnham placed first in diving.
