Roy J. Butkovich

ENGADINE, Mich. – Lifelong Engadine resident, Roy J. Butkovich, 80, died Tuesday afternoon Jan, 2, 2018, at his home, which was built by his grandfather and Roy was born in, surrounded by his loving family and the care of North Woods Hospice following a six month battle with cancer.

Born Aug. 22, 1937, in Engadine, the son of the late Frank and Dera (Stimac) Butkovich, Roy was a 1955 graduate of Engadine High School. On April 11, 1959, Roy married the former Janis Lockhart.

He formerly owned and operated Roy and Jan’s (a restaurant and gas station) adjacent to the Garfield Township Hall and later resided in Marquette where he was employed with the Michigan Milk Producers Association for six years.

Moving back to Engadine, he owned a farm on Pleasant Avenue, worked construction for Earl Legault for two years and was later employed by Inland Lime and Steel for 20 years. In 1975, he bought his father’s farm which always had between 50-100 head of beef cattle and also owned and operated a gravel pit. Just a few weeks prior to his death, Roy and his sons butchered a cow.

Survivors include his loving wife Janis of Engadine; children, Sue (Dale) Greenwald, Charles “Chuck” (Sue), Carl (Cathy), Mike (Lisa), Darin (Rose) and Keith (Mandy) all of Engadine; 12 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren; siblings, Art (Peggy), Don (Cathy), Mary Edwards and Betty (Ed) Mantei all of Engadine; and Rose (Pete) Anderson of Newberry, Mich.; sisters-inlaw Steffie Butkovich of Livonia, Mich. and Judy Butkovich-Malak of Powers, Mich.

In addition to his parents, Roy is preceded in death by his siblings Walter, Richard, Jimmy and two infant brothers; brother-inlaw Bill Edwards; and sister-inlaw Joyce Butkovich.

Visitation was at the Garfield Township Hall on Saturday, Jan. 6, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Funeral services followed at 1 p.m. at the hall with Steve Miller presiding,

Memorials may be directed to the family to be used for projects in Engadine in Roy’s memory.
