Virginia “Ginny” Marie Simi

Virginia “Ginny” Marie Simi, 90, of Newberry, Mich., died Saturday morning Aug. 5, 2017, at the Newberry Assisted Living Community.

Born April 5, 1927, in Manistique, Mich., daughter of the late Edwin W. and Matilda (Erickson) Gray, Virginia married P. James Larson in 1946, who was killed at Inland Lime and Stone Co. in Gulliver, Mich. She then married Carl R. Simi in 1953, who preceded her in death in 1994. Also preceding her in death are sons Rick in 2009 and Scott in 2015; great-granddaughter Keisa Marie Metcalf in 1993 and brothers Ellsworth, Marvin and Junior.

Ginny is survived by her loving children Patrick (Jean) Simi and Lori (Ken) Stokes all of Newberry; daughter-in-law Jean Swanson-Simi of Newberry; siblings Marlene Peterson of Manistique and Marion Zuel of Cudahy, Wis.; grandchildren Billie (Jerry) Leafers, Tina (Roy) Metcalf, Michelle Simi, Charley (Nikki) Simi, Mike (Kate Bek) Simi, Travis Stokes and Ian Stokes; great-grandchildren Aaron Leafers, Abby Leafers, Krista Metcalf, Kassie (Bret) Oven, Roy Metcalf, Ava Simi and Alivia Simi; great-great-granddaughter Paisley Marie Oven all who were blessed to have had her and she will live on in each one of them.

Ginny owned and operated the 4-Mile Corner Market for several years and then worked at Tahquamenon Area Schools as a para-professional. While living out north on the farm, Ginny and her husband Carl grew and sold Christmas Trees. Her favorite time of the year was when families would make the annual ride out to hunt for their favorite tree and cut it down to take home for one of the freshest holiday trees ever to be found. She enjoyed years of fishing at Moon Lake, her many morning coffee friends, making quilts, crocheting scrubbies and many other crafts. She was a true textile artist and won many ribbons for her beautifully made quilts at our local fair.

Ginny was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, American Legion Post No. 74 Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

Per her request, cremation services were accorded. Private graveside services will be held at a later date at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry with Pastor Melinda Shriner officiating.

Memorials may be directed to “Save the Bells”, 302 E. McMillan Ave., Newberry, MI 49868 in memory of Ginny Simi.
