Emeralds golf well at Mustang Invite

MUNISING – The Negaunee boys and Munising girls took the top spots at the Munising Invitational golf meet held Monday.

The Negaunee boys beat out runner-up Manistique by 29 strokes – 333 to 362. Munising finished in third with 391 and Marquette fourth with 408.

There was a difference of seventy-eight stokes in the girls’ competition with the Mustangs taking first with a low 396. Manistique took second with 474 and Ishpeming fell into third with a 519.

Medalist for the boys was Negaunee’s Carter Mason with 75. The Emeralds’ Louis Berry tied for fourth with 87.

Medalist for the girls was the Mustangs’ Bailey Downs, who carded an 84.

“I was very proud of how the kids performed today,” said Head Coach Debra Taylor. “With the Mid-Pens next week, we are looking good.”

For the Emerald boys, Louis Berry finished with an 87 (43, 44); Curtis Byrns 89 (43, 46); Marc McKinney 92 (44, 48); and Alex Oas 94 (43, 51).

Sydnee MacPhail was low card for the Emerald girls with a 112 (57, 55). She was followed by Brooke Whiskin with a 115 (56, 59); Abbi Popour with a 123 (64, 59); and Magan Annelin 124 (67, 57).

Competing at the Kiwanis Invitational in Negaunee, Megan Boyd was low card for the Emerald girls with an impressive 97 (52-45).

The Emeralds are scheduled to compete in Munising Friday and return to their home course May 22 against Escanaba and for the Mid-Peninsula Conference meet May 25.
