Emeralds kickoff season with strong standing
With 10 teams volleying for a title shot, it all came down to Engadine and Manistique in the finals. Undefeated, the Eagles went on to win the tournament with wins of 25-22 and 25-23 over Manistique.
Manistique placed first in their pool by splitting games with Ishpeming to open the tournament. The team then went on to defeat Mid-Peninsula (25-15, 25-22), Superior Central 25-10, 25-16) and Gwinn (25-15, 25-15).
While the Eagles kept a close eye on the competition, Manistique suffered a 26-24 loss to Munising, but then turned on the heat, taking the next two sets (25-22, 15-9) to advance to the finals.
“It was nice to get on the court and see the girls play a match,” Coach Amy Nixon said. “We return five players and have five promising additions to this year’s team.”
Players returning from last year’s squad are seniors Maggie Morrison and Hailey Hoholik, along with juniors Lexi Carlson, Sydney Chartier and Machaela Hinkson.
Joining the squad this year are Amanda Ziminski, Rachel Ryan, Breiann Richey, Jamie Erickson and Allie Nagy.
Manistique will host Ishpeming tonight (Thursday) after press time.
