Bears, new season, new leadership

COOKS – Varsity volleyball for the girls of Big Bay de Noc School is now underway. The team played its first match of the season Tuesday night against Gwinn.

After playing four sets, Gwinn came out the winner, but Coach Lindsea Nieuwenkamp said the girls were excited to kick off their season.

“The Big Bay girls had a great start to their season, even though it wasn’t a win for us,” she said. “They played with their hearts and pushed themselves throughout the entire match.”

The Black Bears started out the night taking the first set 25-21. Unfortunately, although the momentum was there, Gwinn took the remaining sets.

Scores of the sets were as follows:

Set one: 21-25 Big Bay

Set two: 22-25 Gwinn

Set three: 25-16 Gwinn

Set four: 23-25 Gwinn

“We had a nice 11-point run in set four to bring us within one point of Gwinn,” explained Nieuwenkamp. “These sets were very intense, exciting, and memorable.”

The squad will play their home opening match against Gladstone tonight. Junior varsity will start the evening events at 5:30 p.m. Varsity will follow.
