Keeping it ‘Classic’
Anchored by team captain Don St. John lll, Dave Hough, Robert Smith and Bill Neadow fired a frontnine 33, then needed every shot in their bag to fight off challengers to win the tournament. After making the turn, the foursome started the back nine with a pair of pars to maintain their one stroke lead.
Taking advantage of a drive down the middle of the 12th fairway, Smith hit the shot of the day. From just over 200 yards out, Smith’s second shot landed just three feet from the cup. The team finished the hole with the only eagle of the day.
Trailing by one stroke after nine and fighting to get Dan Selling his first green jacket, the team of Don St. John, Skeeter Schuetter, Selling and John Matchinski fired off a back nine 32 to finish one stroke off the mark.
Selling is just one of three classic participants never to wear the green jacket, which is awarded to the tournament champions.
