Potvin breaks 400 meter dash record at UP Finals


Leading by a considerable margin, Big Bay de Noc athlete Cole Potvin dominated in his 400-meter dash heat at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Track and Field U.P. Finals in Kingsford on Saturday. Potvin broke the association’s District 3 record, setting the new bar at 51.17. Graduating on May 25, the Big Bay de Noc senior successfully defended his crown, winning the 400-meter dash while breaking a Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 record with his time of 51.17 at the track and field finals Saturday in Kingsford.

The previous record (51.40) was set in 2005 by Bessemer’s Andrew Mettler.

Potvin followed up that winning effort with a second place finish in the 200-meter dash, two clicks off the pace set by Andy Cooper of Munising, who crossed the line at the 23.89 mark.

Munising won the finals with a team score of 107.5, followed by North Dickinson 68, Rapid River 60, Lake Linden-Hubbell 52, Bessemer 35, Crystal Falls Forest Park 28, Stephenson 28, Big Bay de Noc 22, Powers North Central 19, Pickford 17, Chassell 16, Rudyard 14, Wakefield 12, Dollar Bay 5 Cedarville 1, Engadine 1.
