Seney Refuge sets summer calendar of events

SENEY – The Seney Wildlife Refuge has set its calendar of events through the month of September.

Twilight Tours, June 5, 9 p.m.- midnight. Twilight Tours offer a rare opportunity to experience the Refuge alongside Rangers, during the hours the Refuge is closed. Use your ears not just your eyes on these special nighttime tours to experience evening wildlife activity. (Pre-registration is required).

Wildlife Wednesdays, June, July, and August on Wednesday nights 7 - 9:30 p.m. Experience the Refuge backcountry, traveling roads otherwise closed to public vehicles. Rangers will share Refuge history and management practices, while everyone scans the scenery for wildlife. A tour bus, binoculars, and radios for private vehicles are all provided. People wishing to drive their own vehicles are required to wash potential seed sources from their vehicles before being allowed behind closed gates. First come first serve basis.

Children’s Fishing Day, June 21, registration begins 9 a.m. at the Visitor’s center. Fish entries accepted 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Activities begin at noon. Free fish dinner 3 p.m. The 25th annual Children’s Fishing Day is geared toward kids ages 16 and under and families. Certificates will be awarded to the largest perch and pike. The Visitor Center will hold games, arts and crafts, presentations, prizes, and a free fish dinner for all who attend. Limited poles and bait available.

Interpretation Programs, June - August. Interpretive programs developed around topics of interest, which remain relevant to the Seney National Wildlife Refuge. These programs are varied, so call ahead to find out about topics, dates and times.

Turtle Talk, June 17 and 24, Tuesdays in the Visitor Center, 3 p.m. What species of turtles are found on the Refuge? How are different species adapted to different environments? What’s eating all those eggs they lay along the refuge road edges? Find out all sorts of neat turtle natural history, check out a variety of turtle parts and even experience a live turtle or two during this program.

Wildlife Babies, June 20 and 27, Fridays - meet at the Visitor Center 10 a.m. Join them for a driving tour and a chance to see some of Seney’s wildlife habitat and the wildlife babies it successfully produces. We will look for and learn about a variety of young from cygnets to dragonfly nymphs.

Jr. Duck Stamp Exhibit, July 2 – July 30, regular Visitor Center hours 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Take advantage of viewing the first place winners of original waterfowl artwork, by kids from each US state and territory. The artwork will be on display in the Visitor Center the month of July.

Youth in the Outdoors, Sept. 27. Youth in the Outdoors is a spinoff from our annual “Scout Activity Day.” The day is designed to get youth out into the refuge to explore and learn. Participants may choose from a variety of sessions. The event is open to kids ages 7-17. Pre-registration and a $5 registration fee are required.
