Senior Center News

I am sure by now many of you have heard of the “Cold Water Challenge”. For those who haven’t, it is where a friend or family member nominates someone to go into a “cold” lake within 24 hours. If the person does he/she then donates $10 to a charity of their choice. If you choose not to, you are asked to give a $100 donation.

How would I know the water is cold? Because recently I, along with others, was nominated by my niece Christy Kandell. After much hesitation, I got the courage to do so and back to the word “cold” – all I can say is if you haven’t done it you can’t imagine!

The good part of it is charities benefit by receiving a donation. My donation, along with my daughter, Jennifer and son-in-law, Bill Neadow have been given to the Manistique Senior Center. (Where else would it go?)

Do you have trouble cutting your toenails? The Center sponsors Foot Care Clinics the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. North Woods Home Care & Hospice provides this service for $12.50. Call 341-5923 for an appointment. We ask you bring the correct change along with your own towel.

If you are a diabetic or know of someone who is, you are encouraged to attend the Diabetes Self- Management Workshop which will be offered at the center beginning June 16. The six-week class will meet on Monday evenings from 5:30–8 p.m. You can pre-register by calling (800) 338-7227 or by dialing 211. Subjects that will be covered include: symptoms of diabetes, stress, managing fatigue and emotional problems, exercise, healthy eating, medications and working with health care providers.

For those of you who plan on going on the Kewadin Casino Sault/ St. Ignace/Hessel overnight bus trip on Wednesday and Thursday, May 21 and 22, this is just a reminder to be at the center by 8:45 a.m., as we will be departing by 9 a.m.

Once again, we are asking that you park past the blue shed or on the road, to keep the main parking lot available for those attending the center daily.

Unfortunately, we are going to have to cancel the Spring into Harmony ’14 bus trip but are in hopes of planning another one down the road allowing us more time for advertising.

Drop by the center and see how nice it is decorated. We sincerely wish to thank Mary LaFleur and Joe Jasmin for making this possible. As volunteers, you are the best!

There are still tables available for the upcoming Spring Bazaar and Bake Sale which is scheduled to be held at the center on Sunday, May 24. If you are interested, give Kim Chartier a telephone call at 573- 2462 or Joanne Milavec at 341- 2705.

Craig from Northern Michigan Hearing Clinic will be at the center offering “free” hearing tests on Thursday, May 29. Call (800) 637- 7816 for an appointment.

Rita Peterson and Peggy Beckman dropped by the office with vases. We are still looking for the smaller vases, also. Mary Lou and John Arnold donated coffee, pretzels and a donation towards decorations.

William Deloria surprised the center with a renewal to the large print Reader’s Digest.

The Amity Group, Lucille Boyd and Kristin Anderson dropped by with items for the military packages. Three packages have been prepared with possibly three more to go!

Monetary donations have been received at the center in memory of:

• Elmer Martin from Mary Prater

• Tom Anderson from Carol Anderson

Maintenance and Support Donations were recieved by Laura Lee Tegtman and Moe and Jackie Fagan.
