Michalik makes cut for Junior Olympics

MANISTIQUE – Danny Michalik of Manistique, a 2014 state karate champion, is working to prepare for the Junior Olympic Games in Des Moines, Iowa on Aug. 2.

Matt Flores and other instructors at Bushido Karate will be training Michalik for the competition. Flores is a third degree black belt.

Michalik qualified for the Junior Olympic Games on April 5, in Kalamazoo, Mich., after winning three gold medals and a silver medal in Kumite (sparring), Kobudo (weapons), open hand Kata and Kobudo in the advanced black belt division.

Last year, he finished third and won two national bronze medals. One was received in Kumite (sparring) and the other in Kubudo (weapons) at the 10-year-old male advanced division held in Detroit.

He is the son of Dan and Sara Michalik of Manistique.
