KALAMAZOO – Karate students from Bushido Karate and the Delta County Budokan joined forces to represent the Upper Peninsula and participated in the State of Michigan AAU Karate Championships held on April 5 in Kalamazoo.

The athletes did exceptionally well, with only nine competitors.

The awards/medals received included six gold medals for first place; six silver medals for second place; and two bronze medals for third place – 14 medals in all.

Everyone earned at least one medal. For four of the students, it was their first competition.

The State of Michigan AAU Karate Championship is also the qualifier tournament for the Junior Olympics. Karate students qualify for the Junior Olympics if they place in the top three positions – gold, silver or bronze.
