Elmer J. Martin
He was born Jan. 19, 1930, in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., the son of Amos and Margaret (Donnelly) Martin and attended schools there. He later served in the Michigan National Guard.
On Aug. 5, 1950, Elmer married the love of his life, the former Eileen M. Ellis in Sault Ste Marie and they raised seven wonderful children. The family lived in Flint, Mich., for a few years and moved to Manistique in 1965.
Elmer and Eileen owned and operated the Westside Home Furnishings Store in Manistique for several years. Elmer was known to his customers as “Smiling Elmer”. He and Eileen moved to Iron Mountain in the early 1980s where he worked in the Wal- Mart lawn and garden center.
He was a very devoted and loving husband who encouraged his wife Eileen every step of the way. He drove her back and forth to school in Escanaba while she was obtaining her nursing degree.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Manistique. He loved to go camping with his family and friends at Sawyer Lake in Iron Mountain and also travel in his fifth wheel around the United States. He enjoyed visiting with people, drinking a good cup of coffee, and loved to coffee clutch in his retirement.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Eileen M. Martin of Manistique; his children, Suzette (Arthur) Messer of Gulliver, Mich., Richard (Sandy) Martin of Manistique, Karla (Jeff) Mattlin of Manistique, Christine (Steve) Weber of Escanaba, Mich., Pamela (Mike) Miles of Jacksonville, Fla., and Douglas (Becki) Martin of Northport, Ala.; grandchildren, John (Wendy) Messer, James (Nikole) Messer, Jeffrey Mattlin, Jaclyn (Jeff III) Vail, Greta Peterson,

Martin and Sierra Martin; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sister, Thelma Mansfield of Pa.; sisters and brothers-inlaw; John Sparks of Sault Ste. Marie, James and Connie Ellis of Manistique, Bill and Wanda Ellis of Sault Ste. Marie, Herb and Bernice Ellis of Sault Ste. Marie, Lois and Mort Cook of Alaska, Elizabeth Bumstead of Hulbert, Mich., and Dorothy Jollineau of California; along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Martin; grandson, Robert Carstensen; brother, Lawrence Martin; and sisters, Isabelle Sparks and Florence Trombley.
Visitation was held from 3-5:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 8, at the First Baptist Church in Manistique. A memorial service followed at 5:30 p.m., at the church, with Reverend Jay Martin officiating.
Memorial donations may be directed to the First Baptist Church or to Manistique Senior Center.
