Violet L. Freeland Violet L. Freeland MANISTIQUE – Violet L. Freeland, 90, of 609N Intake Park Road, Manistique, Mich., passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at her residence at Woodland Meadows Assisted Living in Manistique.

She was born Dec. 23, 1923, in Effie, Minn., the daughter of Benjamin and Lillian (Pond) Lockwood and attended Manistique area schools. She was a graduate of Manistique High School.

On Feb. 28, 1942, the former Violet L. Lockwood married Clare B. Freeland in Manistique. They made their home and raised their family in the Green School/Gulliver area and moved to Manistique in 1991.

Violet was a homemaker who also worked as a teacher’s aide at the Mueller, Germfask and Doyle Schools.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Manistique where she sang in the choir and was also a member of the Manistique Women’s Club. She formerly served as the Mueller Township Clerk and also on the Mueller Township School Board. She had a high regard for the opportunities and advantages that can be attained through education.

During her spare time, she enjoyed bowling, golfing and gardening. Most important to her was her interest and emphasis on family and children.

Violet is survived by her husband, Clare “Cal” Freeland of Manistique; sons, James (Donna) Freeland of Cadillac, Mich., William (Sandra) Freeland of Evanston, Wyo. and Dennis (Kathy) Freeland of Gladstone, Mich.; daughters, Barbara

(Robert) Archambeau of Cape Coral, Fla. and Jeanne (James) Malcolm of Chesaning, Mich.; 18 grandchildren; 32 greatgrandchildren; three great-greatgrandchildren; brother, Robert Lockwood of Manistique; sisters, Doris (Dan) Rubick of Manistique, Joanann (Henry) Wells of Manistique and Sylvia Matchinski of Newberry, Mich.; along with nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Fred, James, Benjamin and William Lockwood.

Visitation was held from 1-3 p.m., Sunday, March 30, at Messier Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. Funeral services followed at 3 p.m., at the funeral home with Reverend Jay Martin officiating. Burial will be held in Fairview Cemetery at Manistique.
