Robert P. Ellis


Robert P. Ellis Robert P. Ellis MANISTIQUE – Robert P. Ellis, 87, of 244 N. Cedar St., Manistique, Mich., died Monday, March 24, 2014, at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born June 4, 1926, in Munising, Mich. the son of Erwin Ellis Pugh and Clara “Bessie” (Swanson) Pugh. A patriotic young man, he was offered an early graduation from Grand Marais High School with the Class of 1944 after enlisting in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. During World War II, he served as a signalman aboard the U.S.S. LST 131 until his honorable discharge at the end of the war.

On Aug. 11, 1948, he married the former Beatrice O. Mulligan in Grand Marais, Mich. After living in various communities, they retired back to Grand Marais. For the last few years they lived in Manistique to be close to family members.

He is survived by sons, Russell Ellis of Duluth, Minn., Robert Ellis of Manistique and Gerard Ellis of Broomfield, Colo.; daughters, Susan (Terrance) Schlais of North Prairie, Wis., Mary Ellis of Manistique and Anne Marie (Jeffrey) Haynes of Bay City, Mich.; six grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren with one more on the way; brother, Jack Pugh of Los Angeles, Calif.; brother and sisters-inlaw; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice O. (Mulligan) Ellis and their son, Timothy Ellis; brothers, Roger, Stanley, Willis and Edward Pugh. Special thanks to Mary and Bob Ellis for their loving care of our father.

A Catholic mass and burial will be celebrated at 3 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 11, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Grand Marais with Father Glenn Theoret officiating. Burial will immediately follow in Holy Rosary Cemetery in Grand Marais.

Memorial donations may be directed to Holy Rosary Church Sanctuary Memorial Fund.
