Former Emerald grappler makes run at state title

Gonzalez is shown with the win during one of his matches. Courtesy photo AUBURN HILLS – It was an exciting weekend for former Manistique grappler Cole Gonzalez in Auburn Hills over the weekend.

The junior, who attends school in Norway, finished fourth in the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s 2014 Individual Finals.

Wrestling in the 140-pound weight class, Gonzalez (45-7) won by decision over Brendon Rodenburg of Kent City (48-7), 4-2 in round one.

Advancing to the quarterfinal round, Andres Montoya of Constantine (48-1) won in sudden victory - 1 over Gonzalez, 5-3.

In the consolation round, Gonzalez rebounded and defeated Mathew Potter of Grandville-Calvin Christian (35-11) 4-2.

Gonzalez then won by decision over Jacob Sobeck of Rogers City (Posen) (56-4), 9-4, and Steven Garza II of New Lothrop (28-2), 7-6 for the right to advance to the medal round where he lost to Montoya by a 10-4 decision.
