Harry W. Toennessen Harry W. Toennessen MANSITIQUE – Harry W. Toennessen, Sr., 88, a lifelong resident of Manistique, Mich., passed away Sunday morning, March 2, 2014, at Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique.

He was born Nov. 24, 1925, in Tripoli, Wis., the son of Hiram and Marguerite (Willour) Toennessen. As a child he moved with his family to Manistique. He attended grade school and was a graduate of Manistique High School.

Harry served our country in the United States Army during World War II, seeing action in the European Arena.

On Aug. 7, 1946, he married the former June Hastings in Manistique. They made their home and raised their family in Manistique. June preceded Harry in death on Dec. 20, 1992. He later married Dora Edwards on April 17, 1994, in the First Baptist Church in Manistique.

Harry worked for many years at Inland Lime & Stone, as an electrician, retiring in 1985. He also served as vice-president for the Local Steel Workers Union

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Manistique.

Harry enjoyed fishing, gardening, blueberry picking, 4-wheeling and traveling, especially the family trips with his children out west. He further enjoyed being involved in the community and studying politics. For many years he had been involved with the 4th of July parades and construction of different floats. But more than anything, Harry enjoyed and loved being with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Dora Toennessen of Manistique; daughters, Hazel (Larry) Blandford of Negaunee,

Mich., and Rita (Roger) Jensen of Pagosa Springs, Colo.; son, Harry (Polly) Toennessen, Jr. of Manistique; grandchildren, Scott (Ragen) Toennessen, Timothy (Sheri) Toennessen, Andrew (Michelle) Blandford, Vikki (Henry) Hamblin, and Rachel Jensen; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Harry is further survived by Dora’s children, Linda, Lloyd, Loren, Lonnie and her grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife June, he was preceded in death by his brother, Richard “Dick” Toennessen of Battle Creek, Mich.

Visitation will be held from 3-5 p.m. Friday, March 7, at the First Baptist Church in Manistique. A veteran’s service will be held at 4:45 p.m., in the church, followed by a celebration of Harry’s life at 5 p.m., with Dr. Jay Martin officiating.

Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Manistique in the spring.
