Little Jiggers take to the ice

MANISTIQUE – While runners were positioning themselves for the final leg of the Frosty 5K, the Little Jiggers took over the ice at Quarry Lake in Central Park.

Workers from the Manistique Department of Public Works started drilling holes at daybreak for the arrival of the young fishermen.

Registration for the Little Jiggers was down this year, with only 99 anglers taking to the lake compared to 133 in 2013.

Persistence paid off this year for Matthew Wood, who took fifth place in the 2013 derby. When the final tally was in, Wood took the top prize in the ages 8-16 category.

Second place went to Cameron Lee, followed by Cole Demers, Jerry Jack and Kendra Weber.

The girls ruled the first three slots in the seven and under category. Hauling in the best catch was Olivia Tiglas.

Second place went to Ellie Nedeau, followed by Micah Way, Wyatt Demers and Johnathan Weber.

Ages seven and under category prizes:

First: Olivia Tiglas, night at Tundra Lodge in Green Bay/fishing gear

Second: Ellie Nedeau, night at Country Inn and Suites in Marquette/ fishing gear

Third: Micah Way, night at Holiday Inn Express in Munising/fishing gear

Fourth: Wyatt Demers, $50 gift certificate to Top O’Lake Sports Shop/fishing gear

Fifth: Johnathan Weber, fishing gear

Ages 8-16 category prizes:
