Edward J. Rethman
Dewey was born June 17, 1928, in Saginaw, Mich., the son of Herman and Alvina (Fobear) Rethman. He was raised and attended school in Saginaw.
He proudly served our country in the Merchant Marines, United State Coast Guard, and Untied States Navy during World War II, seeing action in Guam.
In his younger years, he worked as a roofer, later became employed by General Motors Corporation, retiring in 1992, after 30 years of service.
Dewey loved being a race car driver, racing for over 30 years. In 2009, he was inducted into the Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame. He enjoyed NASCAR and visiting different NASCAR tracks around the country. He further enjoyed riding on his pontoon boat, hunting, and going to the casino.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Donna R. Rethman of Manistique; his children, Randy L. Rethman and Catherine A. (Rethman) Fagan both of Manistique; eight grandchildren, Edward A. (Lisa) Rethman, Deanna M. (Jon) Mizer, Dawn M. (Robert) Smith, Allan L. Fagan, Jr., Donna F. (Ronald) Klarich, Daniella L. (John) Johnson, Randy D. Rethman, and Holly Ann Rethman; 12 greatgrandchildren with one more due in July; and three great-greatgrandchildren. Dewey is further survived buy his sister, Helen
Kempter, sister-in-law, Stella Rethman; brother-inlaws, Robert H. (Carol) Garrison and Gerald L. Garrison; several nieces and nephews; many good friends and his faithful dog, Tessie.
Dewey was preceded in death by his parents; son, Edward A. Rethman (Dec. 16, 1988); and brothers and sisters, Dorothy Weigandt, Ruby Smith, Elaine De Clair, Marvin Rethman, Mike Rethman, Donald Rethman, Evonne Daniels, Evelyn Blevins, Amy Sayan, Bill Gerard and Fred Gerard.
In following with Dewey’s wishes, no funeral services will be held. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
