New law lets students postpone jury duty

LANSING – Gov. Rick Snyder recently signed a bill into law allowing full-time college students to postpone jury duty until the end of the school year.

House Bill 4570, sponsored by state Rep. Kevin Cotter, requires the chief judge of a judicial circuit or district to postpone the jury duty of students at Michigan’s public universities, community colleges and other educational institutions and vocational schools, if the student proves that it would interfere with his or her class schedule. A similar exemption already exists for eligible highschool students.

Public sex offender registry gets new look

LANSING – The Michigan State Police has announced the Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry, accessible at www.mipsor.state.mi.us, has a new look. The level of detail and information about offenders will remain the same; however the web site will receive a facelift.

On the site, users can search by city, zip code, county and offender name. Users can perform a radius search for registered offenders up to two miles from an address.

Users can also register to receive an email notification when an offender registers an address within a specified radius of an address. Anyone who previously received emails will need to re-register.
