Emeralds and Bears match up on court

MANISTIQUE –The Emeralds and Bears basketball teams will finish their 2013-14 regular seasons playing each other.

The annual match ups start tonight with Big Bay with hosting the Lady Emeralds. Junior varsity action starts at 6 p.m.

The Emerald boys will host the Bears on Thursday, Feb. 27, starting at 6 p.m.

Gold Medal Classic Tournament dates set

HERMANSVILLE – The 76th annual Gold Medal Classic Independent Basketball Tournament in Hermansville is set for April 3-13.

The tournament was established in 1936 by the late Joe Rodman and has been played every year except for the years during World War II. The tournament will consist of classes A, B, C, D, E, EE, “rec” division and a women’s division. A junior high division for boys and girls will also be available.

Pitching lessons set for spring in Rapid

RAPID RIVER – Pitching lessons from a former Team USA player will soon be offered in Rapid River. All lessons will be one hour in length, price and number of pitchers per hour will vary this year depending on needs.

Doug Gillis is a six-time member of team USA.

In the lessons, each student’s pitching technique will be videotaped for critique, with tips and drills being suggested for practice. All training will be held at Rapid River High School. Cost is $45 - $50 per one hour session.

Ore to Shore to host t-shirt design contest

MARQUETTE – The Marquette General Health System Ore to Shore Mountain Bike Epic is sponsoring a t-shirt design contest for this year’s race on Aug. 9. Artwork is being solicited for this year’s participant t-shirt, which is complimentary to all 28-mile soft rock and 48-mile hard rock riders.

The artist’s work the race organizers feel best represents the race and the organization accordingly will receive $100, expo booth space on bag pick-up night to sell or showcase any other artwork and copyright for the chosen graphic. Please send all designs to oretoshore@gmail.com by the May 30 deadline.

The graphic should showcase the theme, date and “15th Annual” highlight of the Ore to Shore. The race begins in Negaunee and ends at the Lake Superior shoreline. Race coordinators are expecting over 2,500 riders, all who will be sporting a graphic that may be yours.
