DEQ releases annual Michigan landfill report

LANSING – The DEQ has released its 18th annual Report of Solid Waste Landfilled in Michigan, including information on waste from both in-state and out-of-state sources for fiscal year 2013.

All Michigan landfills are required to submit information on disposal to the DEQ. This information is compiled annually into a report for the state legislature.

This year’s report suggests Michiganders are throwing away less trash, down 0.5 percent compared with FY 2012. However, overall waste added to landfills increased by 1.4 percent because of an increase in waste from other states and Canada.

At current rates and presuming no new capacity is permitted, Michigan has an estimated 28 years of disposal capacity left.
