Pioneer-Tribune photo WESTWOOD – Rebuilding years can be tough, and while wrestling hard and showing signs of improvement, the wrestling Emeralds have seen a mix or lumps and bright spots this season.

During the Mid-Peninsula Conference wrestling tournament in Ishpeming this weekend, three Emerald grapplers saw one of those bright spots, making a trip to center stage following the event.

Competing in the 119-weight class, freshman Louie Berry made it to the finals, but his bid to capture a MPC title fell short. Berry lost in the finals 4-0 to Norway’s Tim Huddleson.

Joining Berry, junior Amber Smith placed third, pinning Cedric Nora of Westwood in 2:28 of the match at 112 pounds.

Sophomore Landon Burton also placed third by a default.

The Emeralds had fourth place finishes by second year wrestlers Dylan Stevenson at 140 pounds and Gabe Karr at 171 pounds.

Newcomer Michael Brock also finished fourth in only his second week on the mat at 189 pounds.

Manistique finished sixth overall and were without the services of captain Austin Miller who sustained an injury last week in practice.

Norway retained its MPC title, accumulating 249 points, followed by Iron Mountain with 154, Westwood 122, Ishpeming 104, Negaunee 91, Manistique 71 and Gwinn 37.

With the first of three main events for the 2013-14 season out of the way, Manistique travels to Newberry tonight to participate in the team district championship, followed by individual districts on Feb. 8 in Iron Mountain.
