Sundling scores 17 points in rival win
Fueled by a 17-point performance by Samantha Sundling, Big Bay downed arch rival Rapid River 50-36.
Tina Harris set the tone early netting five points in the first quarter for Big Bay who held a 12-8 advantage when the period came to an end.
Big Bay got five from Patience Harris in the second to help push Big Bay’s advantage to 23-14 at the end of the second quarter. Harris led Big Bay with nine points at half.
Quiet through two quarters of play, Cassidy Cayemberg and Sundling combined for 13 of the Lady Bears’ 15 points in the third quarter. Cayemberg netted seven, Sundling six to push their advantage to 38-21 going into the final eight minutes of play.
Trailing by 17 points, Rapid River paced Big Bay 15-12 in the final quarter. Hannah Kanyuh led the Rockets with seven points; two baskets from behind the arc in the stretch. She finished with 14 points to lead the Rockets in scoring.
Big Bay also won the junior varsity contest 42-30.
Big Bay: Sundling 17, Cayemberg nine, Harris nine, Tina Harris seven, Mariah Yonker three, Heather LaLonde three, Chelsea Thompson two.
The Lady Bears were 18 of 64 from the floor, 12 of 24 from the line.
Rapid River: Kanyuh 14, Aslynn Brockway 10, Kendyl Miller six, Erica Rubick, Maddy Moss and Kendra Lamarque two points each.
The Lady Bears travel to Carney Thursday and Munising Saturday.
