Winterfest week ends at home for Emeralds

MANISTIQUE – A week of Winterfest activities concludes this Friday with the boys and the Lady Emeralds taking on Westwood at home.

The junior varsity games, both boys’ and girls’, will be played at Emerald Elementary. Boys start at 4:30 p.m. and girls follow at 6 p.m.

The freshman boys’ contest gets underway at the high school in the Richard Bonifas gymnasium at 4:30 p.m. The Lady Emerald varsity game will follow at 6 p.m. The Emerald varsity boys will take the court at 7:30 p.m.

The Lady Emeralds, who are coming off a pair of losses to Gwinn in their last two outings, will look to end an eight game skid when they host Newberry tonight.

Yovich Racing team finishes I-500 in top 10

SAULT STE. MARIE – After almost 10 hours of racing, Yovich Racing finished in the top 10 at the 46th International 500 Snowmobile Race last weekend in Sault Ste. Marie.

Seasoned driver Eric Zellar of Germfask was a member of the Yovich Racing team. They finished in the sixth position with a time of 9:50:55.988 and 488 laps.

In lap 10 they posted their best speed of 80.756 m.p.h. and best lap time of 44.578.

In the field of 38, Bunke Racing form Moorehead, Minn., finished the 500 laps in a time of 9:50:33.964 to take first place. Bunke Racing also took the number two slot with a time of 9:50:43.339. a difference of 9.375 seconds.

Still time to register for annual Frosty 5K

MANISTIQUE – The Manistique Snofest Frosty 5K Road Race andWalk will be held Feb. 22.

The entry fee is $15 if registered before Feb. 14 for the 3.1 mile event. Forms can be downloaded from www.cityofmanistique.org under the “download” heading, requested from the Manistique Recreation Director Bill Pohlman at manistiquerecreation@live.com or picked up at City Hall at 300 N. Maple St.

Late registration is $25 and can be completed on Saturday before the race starting at 9 a.m.
