American Legion posts hold mid-winter event

IRON MOUNTAIN – Iron Mountain American Legion Post 50 recently hosted the U.P. Association of American Legion Posts Mid-Winter Conference. The conference was the culmination of a weeklong tour of the U.P. by the Department American Legion commander, the Department Auxiliary president, and the Detachment of Michigan Sons of the American Legion commander.

Tour stops included Pickford, Hulbert, Newberry, Trout Lake, Engadine, Rapid River, Gladstone, Rock, Marquette, Greenwood, L’Anse, Lake Linden, Crystal Falls and Iron Mountain. Dave Spencer, Fifth Zone Commander, from Pickford acted as “Wagon Master” for the tour.

The Mid-Winter Conference is held each January at different locations in the U.P. to give the U.P. Districts a chance to do business within their respective districts. The Upper Peninsula Association of Auxiliaries and Upper Peninsula Detachment of the Sons of the American Legion also conduct separate meetings.

During the conference the Department of Michigan furnishes service officers to conduct a service officer seminar to bring all Legionnaires up to date on the latest developments of the Veteran’s Administration.

All the Posts in the U.P. are members of the U.P. Association of American Legion Posts and meet as a group to conduct business for the U.P., including committee reports from the various committee chairmen. Speeches and presentations are conducted during this session.

The conference concluded with a banquet on Saturday evening. State Senator Tom Casperson was the guest speaker for the evening. Past National Vice-Commander, Department Commander, and retired Iron Mountain VA employee, John Mella, acted as Master of Ceremonies.

The next conference will be the U.P.A.A.L.P. Convention to be held in Escanaba on June 13-14.
