Women’s club to host grief counselor Feb. 11

MANISTIQUE – Grief counselor Carole Cooper will offer insight on how to deal with the loss of a loved one at the February GFWC Manistique Women’s Club meeting. The event is set for Feb. 11 at 12-noon.

Cooper will assist with the club’s annual memorial service for members lost in the past year.

Tickets will be available at the Peoples Store Feb. 3 through noon on Feb. 10. Tickets will not be available after that time. Visitors and new members are welcome.

Community playgroup available in churches

MANISTIQUE – The community is invited to attend area PEP Community Playgroups. The playgroups are held on the first Friday of each month at the Garden Congregational Church in Garden, and the third Tuesday of each month at the Cooks Congregational Church in Cooks.

The playgroups take place from 10 a.m. until noon.

The groups are a fun, educational experience for children age six and under. The groups lead children in literacy related fun, circle time, play stations, crafts and large motor activities. A light snack is provided.

In addition to the playgroups, the Village Artisans will be having a story hour on the second Friday of each month at the Garden church at 10 a.m.

The groups are free of charge and an opportunity for children and adults to gain interaction.

Sons of Civil War sets bi-monthly meeting

MARQUETTE – The Albert and James Lyon Camp of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will hold their bi-monthly camp meeting on Feb. 1. The meeting will take place at 1 p.m. in the Board Room on the basement level of the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans, 425 Fisher Street, Marquette.

The program will be a presentation by Tom Spencer about his ancestor, who served in the Army of the Potomac, and also about his visits to battlefields.
