Miller places third

Courtesy photo MARQUETTE – The U.P. Wrestling Championships were held on Jan. 18 at Marquette High School and, for the second year in a row, won by Gladstone. The squad had four champions and four second place finishers.

The wrestling Emeralds placed 14th out of the 18 schools participating with a team score of 37.

The Emeralds were led by Austin Miller who took third place at 125 pounds.

Miller defeated Brayden Williams of Gladstone 6-1 for third place.

Manistique Junior Amber Smith finished in fifth place at 112 pounds. Smith started her overtime match with a take down to defeat Tom Merchberger of Sault Ste. Marie 6-4.

Also placing for the Emeralds were Landon Burton, sixth place at 215 pounds; and Louie Berry, who also placed sixth, in the 119 pound weight class.

The Emeralds host team duals on Jan. 25 starting at 10 a.m.
