She was born Sept. 28, 1926, in Thompson, Mich., the daughter of Thomas P. and Barbara A. (Krusic) Smith. Faye was a graduate of Manistique High School and a graduate of The Upper Peninsula Beauty Academy of Iron Mountain, Mich. On June 4, 1946, she married Merrill Lavern Archey of Manistique.
Together they raised their six children and always provided a welcoming spot for the cousins and neighborhood kids to hang out. The ‘Hatchery Hill’ was the scene of endless sledding in the winter and ‘Mrs. Archey’ was usually good for a pair of dry mittens, a cup of hot chocolate and a cookie before heading home for the day.
Faye was always very active in her community. She was the secretary of the Thompson Community Club, active with the Merry Maker square dancers, a 4-H leader for many years, a member of St. Anne’s Altar Society, taught after school religion classes in her home, worked CBC, and was always available if someone needed a helping hand. She was a member of St. Francis De Sales parish in Manistique and sang in the Resurrection Choir.
Many will remember Faye as the owner operator of Faye’s Beauty Shop, the business she ran from the late ‘60s until her retirement in 1981. Faye and Merrill spent many years traveling, visiting out of state family members, and enjoying their well-deserved retirement. For 12 winters they stayed in Las Vegas where they also enjoyed spending time with other Manistique natives living in the Las Vegas area.
Faye is survived by her husband of 67 years, Merrill Archey of Manistique; children, Rene (William deceased) Engel, Laurel Glenn, Janet (Dean) Wild, Linda (Mike) Canon, Charles (Kathy) Archey, and Kathryn (Joseph) Wild. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Marie (Russell) Van Horn, Jesse (Tomoko) Glenn, Ann (Adam) Carlson, Benjamin (Laura) Luxford, Alicia (Robert) Moore, Nicholas (Jennifer) Benedetto, Lindsay (Kraig) Chadrick, Marisa (Ryan) Paruch, Andrew Archey, Jamie (Michael) Bent; seven great-grandchildren, Eulalia Carlson, Lillian (Lily) and Lucas Luxford, Peyton and Levi Moore, and Olivia and Annabelle Bent. She also is survived by 38 nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Barbara Cook, Ernest Smith, Amos Smith, Thomas Smith, Vivian Smith, June Gosnell, Bernard Smith, Donald Smith, and Marvin Smith.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis De Sales at a later date.
