‘Christmas with a Cop’ program a success

Twelve area children participate in event

MANISTIQUE – The Fraternal Order of Police in Manistique, consisting of local law enforcement officers in Schoolcraft County, held its third annual Christmas with a Cop program Saturday. Thirteen officers representing the Michigan State Police, Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Department, Manistique Public Safety, Sault Tribe Police, and the DNR gathered along with 12 area children for the event.

Unlike most “shop with a cop” programs, the Christmas with a Cop program prides itself on going the extra mile for the children. Each officer is assigned one child chosen by the local school systems. The officer arrives in a fully marked patrol car and takes the children to breakfast at Three Season’s Café.

The group then heads to Shopko to spend time shopping for gifts for their families. The next stop is Cinema One, where the group gets to watch a kids’ movie. This year’s selection was the Disney movie, Frozen.

During the movie several volunteers from the community come to the cinema and help wrap gifts. After the movie, the officers escort the kids and their presents back home.

The program is community funded and was able to raise over $2000 for this year’s event. The Three Seasons Café donates the breakfast, Shopko discounts many of their items, and Cinema One donates the movie and treats for the kids.
