Fred Peterson Fred Peterson MANISTIQUE – Fred Peterson, 73, of Lakeshore Drive, Manistique, died after a very brief and brave cancer battle, on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, at Marquette General Hospital.

He was born July 20, 1940, in Manistique to Clarence and Irma Peterson, and was a graduate of Manistique High School. Fred served in the U.S.A.F. from 1958–1966, at which time he brought his family home, and he went to work in the family business. He married Mavis Walton while stationed in England, in 1962. She preceded him in death in 1994, after the two of them lived with her cancer for 14 years. Their son, Chris, also preceded him in death in 1995.

Former owner of the C & L True Value Hardware store with his father, and brother Pete for many years, Fred was active in the community through the Chamber and the Elks Club. He helped organize some of the first snowmobile ride-ins in the area. He was an active member of the Manistique Rifle and Pistol Club and was the U.P. Overall Skeet Champion in 1978. When his children were growing up, you could find Fred and his family ice fishing all weekend long on Indian Lake, or in the woods bird hunting in the fall.

Fred was currently employed as assessor for the City of Manistique, and was working out of his home as an independent real estate appraiser. Never a man to sit still, his current hobbies included competitive .22 caliber marksmanship throughout Michigan, furniture building, following current events, cooking for his family and friends, and sipping a diet coke in the afternoon at Wheaty’s Pub.

He is survived by his loving companion, Patricia Tomiko; daughter Julie (Alan) Barr of Manistique; son Dean (Gwen) Peterson of Elmira, MI; and six grandchildren, Bill (Tiffany) Rosemurgy of Ann Arbor, Mich., Libby (Matt) Parr of St. Joseph, Mich., Madeline (Nic) Rosemurgy of Lansing, Mich., Olivia (Craig) Purple, Nick Peterson, Linnea Peterson, and Malcolm Peterson, all of Manistique; brother, Pete (Carol) Peterson of Manistique; sister, Patricia (John) Minta of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; one great-grandchild, Helen of Manistique; numerous nephews and cousins; and two fourlegged children, Harley and Bandit.

Visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, at Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. A memorial service with military honors will follow at 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. A spring burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery in Manistique.
