Participants attentively listen to final race instructions from Manistique cross country Head Coach Laurie Lindstrom prior to the start of the Zombie Run organized by the team as a fundraiser. MANISTIQUE – With three minutes to their advantage, the “humans” took off with a shot gun start at the Zombie Run, held at Intake Park on Saturday. The 180 seconds was just enough time for them to advance on the water hazard course before the “zombies” were released to harvest their “lives”.

Held as a fundraiser for the Manistique High School coss country team, the Zombie Run 5K event was well attended for the inaugural event. Participants could walk or run the course, which was just short of 3.1 miles.

Humans were each given three lives (safety tape streamers pinned to their back) which they hoped they could maintain through the event. Once released, the zombies’ mission was to garner as many lives while only taking one from each human as they covered the same terrain.

Although the rainy weather wasn’t ideal and the water holes very cold, organizers said it all seemed to add to the excitement of the event.

Overall fastest humans were Ryan Hubert and Leigha Woelffer, both of Gladstone. Runner-ups were Dave Partyka of Manistique and Nancy Krusic of Manistique.

Zombies acquiring the most lives overall were Randy Kerr of Newberry and Olivia Holmberg of Manistique. Coming in second in the zombie category were Robert Ayotte in the men’s division and Morgan Tryan for the women.

All those completing the race were presented with a custom participation medal. First place finishes in both the human and zombie categories received hooded event sweatshirts.
