Battling to stay on top of the Mid- Peninsula Conference for the better part of the 2013 season, the Emeralds fell to third place when conference play wrapped up. The team suffered a 3-0 loss to the Norway Knights on the road last Thursday.

“We played hard, but were unable to string together runs of points due to several serving errors,” Coach Amy Nixon said.

Gwinn, who the Emeralds split with during the year, won the Mid- Pens; Negaunee captured second, followed by Manistique.

Nixon said while they struggled in the opener, her team was competitive in sets two and three, but they were up against one of the best hitting and blocking teams they faced this year.

“Although we struggled at times, there were points in the match when we really played well,” she said.

Manistique will finish the regular season in Cooks tonight at Big Bay de Noc (Thursday after press time).

With the conference race behind them, Nixon and her Emeralds will switch their focus to MHSAA District action which gets underway Nov. 4 with a trip to downstate Harbor Springs.
