Donations needed for Christmas program

MANISTIQUE – The Schoolcraft County Department of Human Services is now taking applications for the “Community Giving Christmas Program”. The program provides Christmas gifts for community children, as well as a food certificate for a Christmas meal for individuals and families.

The program is county-wide and is run by the Schoolcraft Christmas Committee, made up of volunteers, DHS and the Manistique Ministerial Association.

To be eligible, a family or individual must be enrolled in the Food Assistance Program with DHS in Schoolcraft County and living independently. Initial mailing of the application (which goes out each year to the qualifying cases active on the FAP program at the time of mailing) has already gone out so if an eligible family has not received one in the mail, they need to come into the DHS office and pick one up or call DHS and have one mailed.

The deadline for submitting an application is Nov. 4 (must be turned in or postmarked by that date).

Those who wish to support the program can take a gift tag from one of the area community giving trees located in area churches, banks and credit unions, and a few stores, and buy a gift for a needy child. Gifts from the area giving trees are due back by Dec. 2.

The Schoolcraft Community Giving Program remains in need of monetary donations to assist in providing the food certificates given to families for the Christmas meal.

Donations can be sent to the Manistique Ministerial Association, c/o Rev. Don Bedwell, 190 N. Cedar St, Manistique, MI 49854 (mark the donation check or envelope for the “Christmas Program”).

All donations made this way are tax deductible and will remain entirely in Schoolcraft County for the program.

In addition, any groups, businesses, organizations or individuals can sponsor a family for Christmas, providing gifts for all of the children in the same family (participants may also provide gifts for the parents as an option) by contacting DHS.

The deadline for applying to sponsor a family in the area is Oct 21.

For more information about the Schoolcraft County Community Giving Christmas Program or to sponsor a family, contact John Sherman-Jones, community resource coordinator, Schoolcraft County DHS at (906) 341-4511.
