Soccer pulls out win

HOUGHTON – Halfway through the 2013 season, the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears soccer team pulled off their first win. On the road against Copper Country Christian School of Calumet, the Bears dominated the field, taking the contest 7-0.

“CCCS is a scrappy bunch, but quite young,” state Coach Gary Sporer. “We were able to use our size and strength advantage to control the middle of the field and keep the play on their end. They played hard right up to the final whistle. We certainly know how that feels.”

Although the outcome was in their favor, Sporer was not totally satisfied with all aspects of the game.

“We feel we let certain aspects of our game slip, but certainly not in scoring,” he said. “It’s a tremendous confidence builder to have a solid win going in to the second half of the season.”

Scoring for the Bears midway through the first period was senior Alex Ranguette.

Matt Moore, a junior, put two between the pipes late in the first period and again in the second.

Additional goals were made by sophomore Mackenzie Desjarden, junior Brett LaLonde and David Green, a freshman.

The final goal of the game was made in the final seconds by eighth grader Taylor Linzmeirer.

“It was gratifying to watch the older players work to get the ball to to the younger players in the final stages of the game,” Sporer added.

The team is on the road for the next two games – Hannahville on Oct. 3 and the Soo on Oct. 5. They return home Oct. 8 to face Marquette.

They will be home again Oct. 10 against Kingsford for Parents Night.
