Emeralds 3-0 in conference play

Defeat Westwood, Gwinn in matches

MANISTIQUE – It was three and out for the Westwood Patriots’ volleyball team last Thursday. Westwood played host to the visiting Emeralds, who made short work out of their hosts.

The Emeralds opened with a 25- 18 win in set one and put together an 11-0 run on their way to a 25-17 win in set two.

They went on to finish off the Patriots 25-16, recording their second straight Mid-Peninsula Conference victory.

“It was nice to keep things rolling in conference play,” Coach Amy Nixon said. “The girls hustled and communicated well all night. Westwood gave us a lot of free balls that we were able to convert into attacks.

We played strong throughout the match,” Nixon added.

Tuesday, the Emeralds kept the conference streak alive with a 3-1 win on the road in Gwinn.

Tied at one after the first two sets, a determined Emeralds squad took control and beat the Modeltowners 25-16 and 25-23 for the win.

“Gwinn is our biggest competition in the conference this year; beating them was huge for us,” Nixon said. “We served very tough and played a great defensive game. I am very proud of their determination and intensity.”

Manistique volleyball will host Norway tonight (Thursday, after press time) and Negaunee next Tuesday.
