High school teams across the Upper Peninsula will take to the field Aug. 30 for their inaugural 2013 games. The Emeralds open on the road in Negaunee Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. In the traditional season-open battle, the Emeralds will look to gain control of the Oscar Wassberg Trophy. The Emeralds’ last rights to the trophy came in a 24-16 win over Negaunee in their 2007 season. Mini scrimmages with Munising, Rudyard, Bark River and Gladstone were held in town last Friday.
