Signe C. Cameron

MANISTIQUE – Signe C. Cameron, 96, of Manistique, Mich., died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique.

She was born July 22, 1917, in Gulliver, Mich., the daughter of Carl A. and Ellen R (Johnson) Nelson and attended school there. She continued her education at beauty school in Traverse City.

On July 29, 1944, the former Signe C. Nelson married James C. Cameron at Zion Lutheran Church in Manistique. They made their home in Detroit where Signe operated a beauty shop. Jim preceded her in death on May 5, 1952. Signe returned to Manistique shortly thereafter.

Signe owned and operated Signe’s Beauty Nook in Manistique for 44 years.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Manistique, along with the Zion Quilters and the Women of the ELCA. She was also a member of the Ida Chapter No. 54 O.E.S. of Manistique where she served as chaplain and was a member of the Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting and traveling.

Signe is survived by her daughter, MaryEllen (Harry) Mageski of Croswell, Mich.; son, James (Jil) Cameron of Whitehall, Mich.; grandchildren, Carl (Mary) Mageski of Ypsilanti, Mich., Daniel Cameron of Whitehall and Emily Mageski (Andrew) Papa of Farmington, Mich.; brother, Fredolf (Dolores) Nelson of Bear Lake, Mich.; sister-in-law, Marjorie Nelson of Camillus, N.Y.; along with several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, C. Ragnar Nelson and Ralph Nelson; sister, Margaret Larsen; and granddaughter, Karen Margaret Mageski.

A celebration of Signe’s life will be held by family members at a later date.

Memorial donations may be directed to the Zion Lutheran Church Endowment Fund or to the Zion Lutheran Quilters.
