Repeating his performance of 2012, was Lee Kanitz of Hessel, Mich. Kanitz completed the course with a time of 1:09. He also improved his 2012 inaugural time, when he crossed the finish line at 1:13:06. The triathlon included a 400-yard swim in Quarry Lake, 16-mile bike ride and 5K run.

Organizers say they were pleased with registration totals for this year after seeing participation in similar Upper Peninsula triathlon events had dropped. In 2012, 19 athletes tackled the three event race. This year, 28 made their way to Manistique for the triathlon.

Cathy Harris, of Manistique, was the lone female to take on the task of competing as an individual in 2012. This year, the field broadened as six took on the challenge. Rebecca Young of Wisconsin captured the top spot for the female category this year, covering the three events in 1:36.

In the team category, first place went to the coed team “Team Nat”. Team members included Zach Lang, Natalie Pohlman and Kurt Loup. They finished with a time of 1:23.

Plans are in motion for 2014’s race. The event will again be held on the third weekend in August, which will fall on Aug. 16.

Beside competitors, several non-competing individuals helped to pull together the event. Individuals interested in volunteering or assisting in the planning process for next year’s event may contact Recreation Director Bill Pohlman at (906) 341-2290 or email manistiquerecreation@live.com.
