Fire causes damage at FutureMark paper mill

MANISTIQUE – An early morning fire Monday caused only minimal damage to a machine at FurtureMark – Manistique. The fire, located in a vent above machinery, was first contained by employees, and then extinguished by firefighters.

According to a press release from the Manistique Public Safety Department, firefighters responded to the report of a fire at 3:59 a.m. in the mill, located at 453 S. Mackinac Street. Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters determined the fire was confined within a vent above a second-floor machine. The firefighters accessed the roof to extinguish the fire.

The amount of damage to the paper machine was minimal, although the roof vent and fan received substantial damage. Officers remained on scene for several hours venting heat from the building and extinguishing hot spots, returning to the station at 6:30 a.m.

Manistique firefighters were assisted by the Hiawatha Volunteer Fire Department and paper mill employees.

2 killed after colliding with DNR dump truck

BURT TOWNSHIP – Two people were killed in a collision last Thursday in Burt Township. The accident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. on H-28 near the Adams Trail in Burt Township.

According to a press release from the Michigan State Police – Munising Detachment, Scott Lakosky, 35, of Manistique, was driving a DNR dump truck southbound on H-58 when a northbound vehicle, driven by Robert Pine, 83, of Grand Marais, crossed the centerline and struck him. Pine and his passenger, Lucy Pine, 79, died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were the Pictured Rocks Park rangers, MSP accident investigators and reconstructionist, Munising Township Fire Department and the Alger County Ambulance and Extrication unit.

Cooks Corn Roast to return this weekend

MANISTIQUE – The 41st annual Cooks Corn Roast and Raffle will take place Sunday in Cooks. The event will run from noon until 11 p.m. at the Inwood Township Hall.

The grand prize drawing for a 2012 Polaris Ranger will take place at 7 p.m. Six bikes will be given away, along with various other prizes.

Games, such as “dunk the fireman” and inflatable bounce houses for children will be available. Bingo, an auction, and bake sale are also scheduled, along with music, which will take place, throughout the event.
