Veteran of the year named

NEGAUNEE – Philip Donald Taskila has been named the 2013 U.P. Veteran of the year. A selection committee consisting of past U.P. State Commanders from various veteran organizations selected Taskila based on a nomination from his VFW Post 3165, of Negaunee.

Taskila is a highly decorated Vietnam War Army veteran, receiving such decorations as the Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, among others.

Taskila has life membership in the Disabled Veterans of America, AMVETS, VVA, VFW, and the VFW Past Commanders Club. He is also a member of the Military Order of the Cootie, an honor society of the VFW. He has served his fellow veterans as a representative of the VFW National Home, VFW National Aide de Camp twice, quartermaster at the post and district level, Marquette County Trust Fund agent and Marquette County senior vicecommander, plus serving on most post chairs and committees.

An avid chess player, Taskila took home the U.P. Championship in 1985 and co-champion in 1980 and 1987.

The U.P. Veteran of the Year will be awarded at the U.P. State Fair on Aug. 16 at 11 a.m. Gov. Snyder is expected to be present at the ceremony. All area veterans and the public are invited to attend.
